From RAF Basketball to the European Championships

Four remarkable women with Royal Air Force connections have reunited decades after first playing together to represent Great Britain in the FIMBA Over-60s Women’s Basketball Team. Their journey is a powerful story of friendship, resilience, and a lifelong love of sport.

A Reunion Decades in the Making

More than 40 years ago, three of the players first met while serving in the Women’s Royal Air Force basketball squad. Their teamwork and camaraderie were built on military courts where discipline and teamwork were part of daily life.

After leaving the RAF, their lives took different directions — careers, families, and new opportunities. But the love of basketball never faded.

Today, those friendships have come full circle as they reunite on the court once again, proudly representing Great Britain in Masters basketball.

The Veteran Spirit

Military service instils qualities that last a lifetime — resilience, communication, and teamwork. These values continue to guide the players as they compete together today.

Basketball has become more than a sport. It has created a supportive community where women over 60 can stay active, challenge themselves, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being part of a team.

Through Masters basketball, they are helping to show that age should never be a barrier to sport.

Looking Ahead to Athens 2026

The team is now preparing for the 2026 European Championships in Athens, where they will represent Great Britain on the international stage.

Bringing decades of experience, determination, and friendship with them, they continue to demonstrate the power of sport to connect people across generations.

Why Masters Sport Matters

Masters basketball provides opportunities for older athletes to stay active, compete, and be part of a vibrant sporting community. Many players also support the sport by coaching, refereeing, and mentoring younger athletes.

Seeing women competing at 60+ helps challenge expectations and inspires others to stay involved in sport throughout their lives.
